Recovery: A Work of Art

On Tuesday, October 18, 2011, Chesterfield County Mental Health held the opening ceremony to its first art exhibition, Recovery: A Work of Art. The exhibition showcased original artwork by consumers in both the Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disabilities programs. Many people challenged by mental health issues find art to be a useful tool in their recovery journey. The ceremony included light refreshments, poetry readings and live music. Paintings, drawings, masks and photographs adorned the walls. A decoy duck, a Viking ship crafted from popsicles, and a robot created by a 12-yr old consumer were among items in a glass display case. The art show was a great success and we hope there will be many more in the future.
